In 2008, I was contacted by Scottish artist Lucy McKenzie to assist on a large installation for the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The trompe l’oeil Art Nouveau interior involved the use of decorative painting techniques including wood graining and marbling. Reproducing these techniques on a rough surface for the first time proved to be a challenge; usually trompe l’oeils are painted on smooth surfaces, facilitating the creation of the desired faux effects. Here the techniques were specially adapted to accommodate the irregular, uneven texture of the canvas.
